A less hip replicate of NME’s Radar tours, New to Q featured Geordie boys Detroit Social Club heading the bill after the studied, soon to be massive rock moves of Tiffany Page.
Arriving on stage late due to technical gremlins, DSC front man David Burn appeared eager to appease a crowd of social club die-hards and inquisitive Q readers. Calling himself a ‘vibe creator’ in interviews, Burn puts plenty into tonight’s performance; part Richard Ashcroft, part strung out man mountain, his bear-like presence is integral to DSC’s live show. To his left, guitarist David Welsh is another key player; all fringe and psych-guitar chops, his effortless strokes leading his band mates onwards and upwards.
Only two singles old (with an album to follow at the end of May), DSC seem happy to operate under the radar, for now at least. New single ‘Prophecy’ has a chorus big enough to fill fields this summer, while ‘Mind At War’ is a sprawling, rhythmic Primal Scream affair and ‘Kiss The Sun’ a madcap sing-along with designs on Kasabian stadium territory.
Developing their already impressive live show seems to be DSC’s priority into the summer, and with major label backing (through Fiction), we wouldn’t bet against them becoming a surprise hit at the major festivals. TAGS: Detroit Social Club, Fiction Records, Sound Control Words by: Alistair Beech |
