As the NME bus chugs into town once more, HV is pleased to find two familiar acts topping the bill. Everything Everything are currently mixing their debut album, which promises much on the basis of their under-the-radar singles and jaw-dropping live shows.
They begin with the strangling rock-out of ‘Suffragette Suffragette’; a fired-up opener combining stuttering rhythms and the biggest guitar riff you’ll hear all year. New single ‘Schoolin’’ (out June) is a tetchy mix of prickly guitars and beaten up percussion and ‘MY KZ, YR BF’ rolls with deep melodies and street hip-hop grooves. Barmy and pretty wonderful.
Expectation surrounds Hurts as they embark on their second round of shows, and Theo, Adam and band do not disappoint. Simply put, from tonight’s show they’re in possession of four or five major league pop songs; songs that sound incredible on first listen and remain unshakeable.
‘Wonderful Life’ is a slice of layered, moody 80s brilliance, while ‘Stay’ floors us with its straddling hooks and gargantuan chorus. Onstage, Theo is a coiffured pin-up in the making while a barrel chested male provides bellowing vocals from the back of the stage. Musically it’s all there too, and will only sound better in the more expansive venues that Hurts will surely call home in the future. ‘Better Than Love’ ends the show with some style, its disco backing propelling more pop beauty.
Hurts, you’ve snared us. It’s going to be special. TAGS: Everything Everything, Hurts Words by: Alistair Beech Links: Everything Everything - Myspace
