Before it was bought out and converted into a church, the Olympic Auditorium in LA had quite the reputation for being a notorious punk rock venue, playing host to the likes of The Dead Kennedys, PiL, The Vandals, Bad Religion and, of course, crossover thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies. As local boys, and having played the venue back in the day on numerous occasions, it seems only fitting that ST were asked back to play what was to be the last ever show at the venue, which has been captured in all its frenetic glory on this DVD.
Having caught ST only a couple of weeks ago at Hammerfest, I'd already experienced the band's live show first hand. Obviously, there's no way that a recording could match up to actually being there, but this DVD at least gives you some idea of just how intense an ST show (or a thrash or hardcore punk gig, more generally) can be. Considering ST have been around for almost 30 years, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the guys in the band might have stepped it down a notch, and while perhaps it's no longer as raw and aggressive as it was back in the 80s, they still give it their all, and are just as rowdy as the teenagers moshing along in the crowd...
The setlist reads like an ST greatest hits CD, focusing heavily on the band's early material, such as 'Two-Sided Politics', 'Won't Fall in Love Today', 'Subliminal', 'Institutionalised'... basically, most of the band's eponymous debut album, along with a number of other earlier tracks, like 'Possessed to Skate', 'War Inside my Head' and 'Waking the Dead'. Admittedly, there's nothing that your average ST fan hasn't heard before, but the real selling point here is that apart from a dodgy 20-year-old VHS bootleg, there's no official ST video releases out there, which makes this a must-have for ST completists.
