For a city the size of Manchester the amount of decent indie clubs on a weekend is a bit pathetic. Sure you have Up The Racket (at Retro Bar on occasionally Fridays) and Saturday at Tiger Lounge used to be OK, if you can stomach the terrible sound. Maybe it's the fact that Manchester is all clubbed out by the weekend, a tribute to consistently excellent nights like Revolver and Now Wave. Or the thriving electro scene at nights such as Clique, S'il Vous Plait, Bring on the Dancing Horses, Micron and Contort. Not to mention The Warehouse Project.
Yet the Star & Garter is still the bastion of all things indie. Whilst new nights like Shake it! Shake it! sit alongside Smiths and/or Belle & Sebastian discos, Smile has prevailed into a weekly Saturday night for 16th years. An incredible achievement. Especially when the Star & Garter isn't the easiest venue to find, loosely located "near to Piccadilly Train Station", or, more accurately "near the prostitutes".
