Sad Day for Puppets --- 31.08.10

Ok, I want you to stay calm, but I have to tell you something. See, I went out into the woods and there were these puppets… and they were so upset about something. They sang a bunch of really pretty, melancholy songs to try and articulate the way they were feeling, and somehow I could tell that the experience had been cathartic for them.

When I left and went home to my bed, I just couldn’t get those songs out of my head, so I snuck out to the woods again, trying to find the clearing that I’d stumbled upon the day before. It was dark, and I couldn’t see; the forest encroached on either side, and just as I was giving up hope, distant flute...

01.06 // 65 Days of Static - We Were Exploding Anyway

Stalwart prog enthusiasts, 65daysofstatic have plied their trade for the best part of a decade and having just released their fourth studio album, We Were Exploding Anyway, Yorkshire’s finest are still evidently still keen as mustard. Midway round their European tour, High Voltage caught up with 65days’ Paul Wolinski…

You've been together in one form or another for nearly 10 years now.  How do you stay enthusiastic about the band?

Loads of coffee...

21.05 // Liars

One of the stand out albums of the year so far has been Sisterworld by Los Angeles based post punk three piece LIARS. High Voltage hooked up with drummer Julian Gross to talk about the album, Los Angeles and telling lies…

First off the new album is really great, the sticker on the front told me that the album is based on your experiences in LA. Can you tell us a little bit about those experiences and how they manifest themselves onto the new album??

"Our...

07.05 // Holy Fuck

In a music world obsessed with gadgets, and technological advances, Toronto’s Holy Fuck are a breath of fresh air. Their analogue and organic approach to dance music has produced two excellent albums, with the release of their third, Latin, due next week. A UK tour is on the horizon, so High Voltage caught up with Brian Borcherdt from the band to discuss the band's lo-fi approach.

Although LP was your second album, it was the first to make an impact in the UK. Due to its...

06.05 // Rolo Tomassi

Sheffield-based prog hardcore outfit Rolo Tomassi have been going from strength to strength over the last few years, and are set to return later this month with a UK tour and the release of the second album, ‘Cosmology’. Ahead of their tour, High Voltage caught up with vocalist and keyboard player James Spence to chat about their sound, their history, and their plans for 2010.

28.04 // YACHT

HV interviews Claire from YACHT, and gets rather more than we bargained for…

When we last saw Jona perform in 2006, he was dancing alone in front of a video projection in La Fleche D’Or, Paris, whilst supporting Junior Boys. What’s changed?

A great deal. Of course, there are the physical differences: the addition of one (Claire L. Evans), and then three more new members (the group now known as the Straight Gaze). The gradual movement from solo...

26.04 // Airship

The pace of the current music industry often sees artists bowled through every possible medium, in the hope that someone, somewhere will care. Behind the scenes, PR people bounce emails around, in a perpetual state of panic, pushing bands as products, desperately trying to turn pure talent into dirty, dirty cash cows. Some bands however, remain untainted, pure at its core and creatively unbridled.

Airship recently embarked on a European tour...

10.04 // Mariachi El Bronx

There aren’t many bands out there with the ability to drag themselves out of the coziness of their genres and master the sounds of another, let alone many that have the skills to play the array of instruments needed to cut it as a mariachi band.

Enter the Bronx, also now known as Mariachi el Bronx.

Originally a tattooed hard-as-nails punk rock band from LA and well-respected within the genre, this enterprising outfit have unlocked the key to wider appeal by...

06.04 // Memory Tapes

The first question is one of etiquette. How best to address the man of musical mystery who to date has worked under the aliases of Memory Cassette, Weird Tapes, and most recently combining the two, Memory Tapes. “Hi, I'm Dayve”, he says, by way of an easygoing introduction.

This is his second visit to Manchester, the home of New Order, perhaps the biggest of his largely Anglophile musical influences (for evidence, hear the typically Bernard Sumneresque riff with...

02.04 // The Features

The Features are about to come over to the UK, with a date at The Roadhouse in Manchester on 22nd April. High Voltage managed to catch up with them to discuss their relationship with Kings of Leon, Their views on the UK music scene and why drinking out of date milk is bad....

"In rock & roll years we're geriatric" said drummer Rollum Haas. He's right - despite many reviews labelling "]The Features as the 'latest new and up-coming American band to hit the UK', these boys have...

29.03 // Everything Everything

"I don't know where we are. Somewhere west of London." Calling from a service station somewhere in the UK, Manchester's Everything Everything had better get the GPS fixed soon as they’re going places. En route to Brighton (apparently), HV catch up with Jeremy from the band to talk about SXSW, the joy of not telling the truth and being the new Beastie Boys...

For the uninitiated, Everything Everything might just be the most thrillingly original thing to happen to British...
