09.05 // Tiffany Page

In town to promote her forthcoming album, Tiffany Page has landed a prestigious support slot with Hole. HV catches up with her before the show in Manchester for a few choice words...

HV: What can we expect from your new album, 'Walk Away Slow'?

TP: I'm really excited about it actually – there are so many songs that I really want people to hear, especially my friends. There are also songs which we haven't played live yet; we're playing one of the new songs, 'I am the Blaze', for the first time this evening! I hope there's something for everyone on this album – there are some darker songs, and also some more light-hearted song too. My lyrics aren't 'happy-clappy' as such; there are some pretty serious songs on there...

When will the album launch?

The new album will be released on the 21st June.

Did you write the songs yourself?

Yes, I've written every song, but some have been co-written too. I like collaborating with people, as it can teach me a lot. I've been writing on my own for a long time; I guess I much prefer collaborating - it's awesome to share ideas and thoughts with someone.

So, how did you first get into playing music?

I've always loved singing from an early age; I've always had an ear for music. I guess because I've loved music so much, it has always been a natural progression to push myself further, such as learning to play an instrument and writing songs. I never really thought I would make a career out of music, however, I'm really lucky that things have happened. I've put in a lot of hard work and things have worked – it's great. I didn't go to music school or anything like that, I'm just fortunate that I've been given some support from some wonderful people. It's a lot to do with luck too... a combination of luck and timing.

What do you make of the frequent comparisons made between yourself and Chrissie Hynde?

It's a massive compliment, but I haven't a clue how it came about! Chrissie's voice, everything about her is incredible – but I don't really listen to the Pretenders, so I'm a little baffled why people keep on comparing us both – maybe we're both really similar people, I don't know?! I suppose, musically, I can sort of see where we're a little alike – but it's not intentional at all. If I wanted to sound like anyone, it would probably be... Hole – Courtney Love is incredible. Since I was a kid, I've always been fascinated by her and her music. It's been an unbelievable privilege to tour with Hole, as well as the Noisettes earlier this year.

Tell us your main influences?

Well, obviously Courtney Love, but definitely Nirvana too. Also, bands such as Babes in Toyland, Pearl Jam – mainly grunge bands. I like alternative music, but not too alternative. Saying that, I've started to get into my metal... (laughs).

We hear you're playing Glastonbury; excited much?

I've never been, so yes, I'm incredibly excited. I'm also back in Manchester on May 10th as we're scheduled to play at gig at Sound Control, as part of the New to Q Tour.
