Hoodlums are South East London’s answer to the distinct lack of decent, non-American pop music being played on Britain’s airwaves this year. Proving that the dullest of places (i.e. Deptford) can produce the most vibrant of sounds, theirs is a style that cannot fail to provoke a smile.
These lads haven’t even released a debut album, and yet their sound is so polished and perfected that you can almost hear the Radio 1 DJs introducing it as the next big thing.
It’s all about call, response and poppy choruses that, live, will no doubt have the whole room singing along. Even Hoodlums’ drummer contributes to the warm vocal harmonies, sung with a refreshing amount of enthusiasm and good humour.
This is really well-written stuff: in fact the lyrics flow so well it’s as if they wrote themselves, and you’ll probably know most of them after just a few of listens. Coupled with the bouncy melodies and sunny mixture of guitars and keys, these songs will stay in your head for hours.
So if in need of cheering up this week, look no further than Deptford.
