In the wake of the mainstream success of Mumford & Sons earlier this year, folk-pop appears to be on the rise. My First Tooth play happy, upbeat folk that, musically, is somewhere between Bright Eyes and the soundtrack to 2007’s hit teen pregnancy movie, Juno.
The fast strumming guitars and male/female vocal harmonies of ‘Margaret Yen’ make for a sound that is instantly catchy – something which folk often fails to achieve. And ‘Sleet and Snow’ shows off a talent for sweet yet eloquent song-writing, embellished with lovely metaphors about avalanches.
That might all sound very wintry, but in My First Tooth’s soft yet happy vocals emerges the mood of a warm and relaxing summer’s day – with a bit of a kick coming from their strong guitar licks and hum-along harmonica tunes.
For the summer, this is the sort of folk you want to stick around: with chilled out melodies and a smile on its face.
My First Tooth are performing at Manchester Ram & Shackle on April 30.
