In the wake of recession, parliamentary corruption and the first UK election debate ever broadcast, it’s no surprise that interest in politics is on the rise. For Derek Meins and Robert Dylan Thomas, recent events have sparked more than just interest: they were inspired to create music designed to empower people to stand up against the status quo and demand something better.
Their sound is built on the idea of making raw, bare bones music. The result is something almost acapella – just drums and vocals, brought together with a passion that makes all other instruments appear entirely pointless.
Meins’ seriously strong voice adds sheer confidence to Thomas’ pounding drums, at a volume that would give Florence [Welch, Florence and the Machine] a run for her money.
Let’s Start Marching is a tirade of shouting and chanting that really makes you want to get off your arse and join a protest. But it’s not all serious politics – the danceable drum beats and uniqueness of The Agitator’s sound create an optimistic vibe that’s like The King Blues, but stripped right back.
